His luck, along with mine and Wes Smith' ran out in 2010 as neither of us got drawn for the 2010-2011 Kentucky Elk Hunt. However, Brian was able to bag a nice P&Y Kentucky Bull Elk last season, and the smile across his face, along with his father, Billy, in the picture below, signifies the joy it is to be able to hunt one of these awesome animals. Brian's Bull Elk was harvested using a Matthews LD bow and Easton arrows topped of with a 100 grain GrimReaper Broadhead.

Largest Typical Kill of 2009 Confiscated

When Lewis County, KY resident, Johnny Clay, first put on display a 214 gross score whitetail deer taken by bow in 2009, the people who viewed the massive animal were in awe at the sight of it. In the end, the deer netted a score of 197 2/8 after the 60-day drying period, which in turn made it the biggest typical whitetail kill in the entire United States for the 2009 deer season as well as shattering many Kentucky whitetail records.

The story behind the deer according to Clay in a video provided by Ohio based Outdoor Insights' Game On, who runs a legitimate and professional business and who have been caught up in Clay's untruthful mess can be viewed by clicking HERE. In the video, Clay says he shot the buck on September 22nd in Eastern Kentucky but pulled a bad shot on the animal, which in turn caused him to not be able to locate the impressive deer until 11 days later. Clay said in the video he punched his release from all the excitement thus causing the bad shot, which according to Clay was a gut shot because he discovered evidence of a gut shot on his arrow in the form of feces. The video link includes pictures of the buck's condition on the day of discovery, which many who have viewed the story say there is no way the buck could be in the shape it was after only 11 days in the field. In the images shown, there is nothing but a skull and a big bunch of bones in the form of massive antlers attached to it. No hair whatsoever nor is there any other skeletal remains besides the head in the location the animal was discovered.

With information being made available through several online hunting forums such as www.kentuckyhunting.net and www.ohiosportsman.com it appears Clay recently had the deer he claims was shot with a bow in Kentucky confiscated by officials with the Ohio Department of Fish and Wildlife during an expo show in Ohio where the deer was on display. The reason for the confiscation of the deer is that it was actually taken illegally in Ohio, not Kentucky like Clay has stated.

Although the case has not officially ran it's course yet and is still under investigation, the information being talked about by countless hunters who are close to the story and know pertant information behind the confiscation are saying the biggest deer harvested in 2009 was not taken legally and the story behind the story is all lies.

Below are pictures of the deer before and after the mounting process took place. To say the deer is impressive is an understatement. However, as of right now, the way things look to pan out on this story, the deer's method of harvest appears to be the worst of the worst.....poaching. Another sad part of this story is that Outdoor Insights' Game On, among others have been caught up in Clay's web of deceit as well.

This picture shows Clay holding the massive buck he says was taken in Lewis County, KY during the 2009 hunting season. However, officials with the Ohio Department of Fish and Wildlife recently confiscated the buck because of it not being taken in Kentucky, but rather Ohio illegally. The following review will highlight the many great features included with the Mongoose release.

LENGTH ADJUSTMENT: A key feature with the release is the ability to adjust the length of the release to meet the needs of the shooter. This is done by loosening the two screws in front of the buckle strap, taking the pressure off the nylon strap. After adjusting to the proper length, simply re-tighten the screws so the strap is secured properly without movement. An important thing to remember when attempting to adjust the release length is to not over-tighten the screws, as it will cause the threads to strip out of the release.

TRIGGER ADJUSTMENT: Another feature included with every Mongoose release is the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the trigger. To do this, locate the set screw found at the base of the trigger. If the shooter wants more tension on the trigger he/she can turn the screw clockwise or if the shooter desires to decrease the tension, the screw should be turned counter-clockwise. To test for the desired sensitivity, it is important to test the adjustment after each quarter-turn increment. Please note it is possible to make the trigger too sensitive by adjusting the screw out too far.

SCOTT RECOMMENDATIONS : Scott recommends that releases may be used with a string loop or directly off the bowstring and in combination with an eliminator button or synthetic nocking point. However, Scott DOES NOT recommend using any Scott release in combination with any metal loop device, or let the jaws come into direct contact with a brass nock set or any other metal device. Failure to follow these instructions, which will show signs of wear/damage voids the warranty of the release.

RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE: Scott recommends the release should be blown out with dry air after use in damp environments. Once the release is dry, it should be re-lubricated with any light machine oil.

WARRANTY INFORMATION: To view information relating to Scott's FIVE-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY, see their FAQ (frequently asked questions) section or contact CUSTOMER SERVICE, Please click HERE

If you would like more information concerning the equipment & accessories offered by Scott Archery, you can connect directly to their site by visiting our LINKS section or by clicking HERE

BUCK NASTY OUTDOORS REVIEW: From the first release of the arrow, you automatically know the Mongoose is a smooth shooting release. With it's adjustable length option, it can be made to fit any shooter's style. Another feature, as mentioned, is the ability to adjust the trigger sensitivity. However, after countless draws and releases, I have yet to adjust the trigger on my release because I felt very comfortable with the setting straight out of the package. But, for those of you who like a little more or less resistance with your trigger release, the option is there with the Mongoose.

COMFORT: One thing which impressed me with the Mongoose NCS buckle strap release is its comfort. In the past, I have had other buckle straps on different brands of releases, which had the tendency to dig into your wrist, which in turns causes discomfort over the course of shooting. However, that is not the case with not only the Mongoose, but every other Scott Archery buckle secured release I have ever shot. The comfort is there for the duration of your shooting excursion whether it is a round of 3D or a day or practicing for the fall hunting season.

SMOOTHNESS: I can't express how smooth the Mongoose release is. Shot after shot it releases the same way each and every time, which in turn allows every shot to be as smooth as the one before it. There is no hesitation with the trigger in cooperation with the locking jaws whatsoever. When you apply the proper pressure, depending on how you have the adjustable trigger set, the Mongoose releases the same way each and every time enabling you to stay consistent shot after shot.

CONSTRUCTION: It's no surprise Scott Archery Products are built to last. Just ask any of the countless number of shooters who trust their equipment. And it just isn't their top end releases either. The quality and craftsmanship put into every release Scott Archery produces is seen as soon as it's removed from the factory package and put to use and the Mongoose is no exception. As mentioned earlier, the Mongoose is smooth shooting each and every time, and you just don't get that with a cheaply made release, which is something the Mongoose is not. It's solid construction extends from left to right and front to back.

CONCLUSION: There are three words I would use to describe the Mongoose by Scott Archery Products.....SMOOTH, DURABLE and COMFORTABLE....Because that is what you get when you purchase this release. I urge you to give it a try if your in the market for what is, in my personal opinion, an unbeatable product.

Editor's Note: Buck Nasty Outdoors is in no way affiliated with or sponsored by Scott Archery Products and this review is being given after my own personal experience with the Mongoose Single-Caliber Archery Release.
